Texas man convicted on federal drug charges

A 31-year-old Texas man faces up to 20 years in a federal prison after being convicted of conspiracy to distribute marijuana. A jury found the man guilty after a trial that lasted for only one day according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Texas. The man was indicted along with six alleged co-conspirators in July 2019. Five of his co-conspirators subsequently pleaded guilty to drug charges. The sixth is currently a fugitive.

Prosecutors say drug traffickers in Oregon used the U.S. Postal Service to send packages of marijuana to the man and his co-conspirators. The group is said to have distributed the drugs in cities including Wichita Falls, Iowa Park and Henrietta. The proceeds from the drug sales were then sent back to the Oregon suppliers according to prosecutors.

Evidence presented during the man's trial convinced the jury that he had personally received almost 30 packages of marijuana and tracked several other drug deliveries on the USPS website. Prosecutors alleged that he also collected the proceeds of illegal drug sales. The man's trial was the first federal criminal trial heard in Wichita Falls in eight years. The case was investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Wichita Falls Police Department.

Federal prosecutors tend to only take criminal cases to trial when they have compelling evidence of guilt, which is why experienced criminal defense attorneys may encourage individuals facing federal drug charges to consider entering into a plea agreement. The penalties for federal narcotics crimes are usually severe, but U.S. attorneys may be willing to reduce them substantially in return for a swift and successful resolution.
