Authorities in Texas found 31 pounds of marijuana in a 2013 Hyundai after responding to the scene of an accident. The accident took place at the intersection of Victory Drive and Indian Springs in Marshall. An officer at the scene reportedly smelled a strong odor of marijuana and asked the driver of the Hyundai about the smell.
Police say that the 48-year-old man was nervous after the officer inquired about the smell. Firefighters were called to the scene and forced open the trunk to see what was inside, and that is when authorities claim to have found the marijuana inside of a bag. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody at the scene. He is being held on $15,000 bond at Harrison County Jail on a marijuana possession charge.
Individuals who are charged with drug offenses such as possession of marijuana may face penalties such as prison time or a fine. They may also be placed on probation in addition to spending time in jail. Those who are facing these or other consequences may benefit from hiring an attorney to help with their cases. An attorney may be able to negotiate a plea deal or help a person get a case dismissed before a trial.
This might be done by suppressing evidence or otherwise casting doubt about its validity. An attorney may also point to a defendant’s ties to the community as a reason why a prosecutor should agree to a plea deal. Plea deals may allow a person to remain out of jail or eliminate other penalties associated with a charge. If a case does go to trial, an attorney might cast doubt on evidence presented such as a police report or witness testimony.
