Father and son busted for transporting 49 pounds of pot

On May 3, Texas authorities arrested two San Marcos men for allegedly attempting to transport a large amount of marijuana. The defendants are father and son.

According to media reports, the bust took place after someone tipped off the San Marcos Police Department about possible criminal activity occurring at an apartment on Craddock Avenue. Officers from the department and the Hays County Narcotics Task Force surveilled the residence and allegedly observed the defendants loading large cardboard boxes into a pickup truck.

After the truck left the residence, officers pulled it over on the 200 block of Sessom Drive. A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered 49 pounds of marijuana and $26,000 in cash. A police radio was also found. The defendants were arrested and charged with felony possession of marijuana and felony money laundering. They were both booked into the Hays County Jail and held on $18,000 bail. According to a representative of the Hays County Narcotics Task Force, the drugs were likely smuggled into Texas from a state that has legalized medical or recreational marijuana.

Defendants convicted on a drug charge in Texas could suffer serious consequences, including jail time and fines. They could also be left with a permanent criminal record, which could limit their future employment opportunities. However, by working with a criminal defense attorney, a defendant may be able to obtain a more positive outcome. An attorney could work to poke holes in the prosecution's version of events. Legal counsel could also scrutinize police conduct for signs they violated a defendant's rights during the investigation. In some cases, an attorney may recommend negotiating a plea deal that allows the defendant to plead guilty to reduced charges.
