Pot growing operation busted by deputies

A young Texas woman and her alleged accomplice are behind bars after Hays County deputies raided their residence and discovered 150 marijuana plants. The pair has been charged with felony possession and manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance. Their bond was set at $35,000.

Deputies executing a felony search warrant on January 31 found what was described as an elaborate grow operation located north of Dripping Springs. In addition to marijuana, the officers allegedly discovered methamphetamine and psilocybin mushrooms in the residence. The 21-year-old woman had been previously arrested and charged with participation in a string of vehicle burglaries around Dripping Springs. She was one of eight people recently arrested in the spree.

Manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance is the criminal charge in Texas for any type of illegal drug dealing. Penalties depend on the amount and type of substance involved, but some offenders can be punished with years in prison and high fines. In situations where search warrants are involved, a key element of defense is analysis of the warrant and reliability of any information leading to its issuance. When officers executing a warrant do not follow proper protocol, the search could be deemed illegal.

If an alleged offender faces a likely conviction, the advice and counsel of an experienced criminal defense lawyer can be vital. Attorneys can often negotiate plea bargains that balance the risk of conviction against the time and expense to the state for prosecuting the offense. Drug offenders often have addiction issues, and treatment plans can be part of a negotiated plea deal.
