2 charged after police find 677 lbs of pot in RV

On Jan. 14, two individuals were charged with drug possession with intent to distribute after Texas authorities found more than 670 pounds of marijuana in a recreational vehicle during a traffic stop. It was estimated that the street value of the marijuana was more than $2 million.

A police officer executed the traffic stop on the RV after the deputy observed the driver weaving across the center line. When the driver stepped out of the RV to talk to the deputy, it was reported that he appeared nervous. However, the 59-year-old man gave consent to search the RV. The officer found the RV full of high-grade marijuana.

Authorities reported that the marijuana was packaged into amounts that were about 1 pound each before being put into vinyl bags and boxes. It was believed that the two individuals were transporting the marijuana from California to Dallas. The driver and a passenger, age 46, were ultimately charged with felony possession of marijuana with intent to deliver. Their bail was set at $35,000.

A conviction on these types of drug charges can result in serious consequences. Depending on the type and amount of drugs involved, a person could be facing a prison sentence, probation and other consequences that could have an impact on his or her future. For example, a person with a criminal record could find it difficult to obtain employment or get a loan. A defense attorney could challenge the traffic stop if the police did not have the requisite reasonable suspicion to make it. If successful, the evidence seized could be excluded from trial, which could lead to the charges being dropped.
