According to law enforcement authorities with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office, six men were taken into custody for an allegedly sophisticated marijuana growing operation. Search warrants were reportedly executed on multiple residences in late September, resulting in the arrests of the men.

Trooper discovers 29 pounds of marijuana in SUV gas tank

The Texas Department of Public Safety has announced that a routine vehicle stop on the afternoon of Oct. 2 led to the discovery of a significant quantity of marijuana. The 22-year-old Brownsville man who was behind the wheel of the SUV involved was taken into custody following the search and charged with a felony count of drug possession. Reports indicate that he was transported to a detention facility in Willacy County after being booked and processed.

'Cite and release' program approved in Dallas

Those caught with less than 4 ounces of marijuana in Dallas County may not necessarily be sent to jail. Instead, a new "cite and release" program will allow police to issue a summons. Having received approval from both the Dallas City Council and Dallas County, the program is scheduled to begin Dec. 1. One county commissioner voted against the program, and that was because he felt the program didn't go far enough.

FBI statistics show drug arrests on the rise

The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Report indicates that the number of drug arrests increased nationwide in 2016 by 5.63 percent. Law enforcement agencies reported upwards of 1.5 million arrests for the violation of drug laws during that year, many of which occurred in Texas. More than 1.33 million of those arrests, accounting for 84.6 percent of the total, were for drug possession. Approximately 41 percent of the arrests were related to marijuana, the overwhelming majority of which were for marijuana possession.
