Uber ineffective against drunk driving

Texas residents should know that the popular ride-sharing services offered by companies like Uber have no effect on drunken driving fatality reductions, a claim Uber uses to encourage use of its service. This rebuttal is supported by a study conducted by the University of Southern California and Oxford University.

There are multiple examples in which Uber has used a reduction in drunken driving claim as a reason to use its riding services. A blog post added to its website in 2015 detailed a survey it conducted jointly with Mothers Against Drunk Driving that claimed people were not as inclined to drive while drunk since the availability of the Uber service.

Uber also promoted a 2015 study conducted by Temple University that showed a link between the introduction of Uber services and the reduction of drunken-driving deaths in California. The researchers of the study stressed that information was gathered from only one state and that the study did not factor in other elements that could affect drunk driving.

The USC and Oxford University researchers examined data from prior to and after Uber and other similar companies placed their services on the market. The data showed that ride-sharing accessibility had no bearing on alcohol-related driving deaths. The data was obtained from 100 metropolitan areas from dozens of states. The study instituted controls for the effects certain state-level laws could have on alcohol-related driving deaths, including alcohol taxation and legislation against texting while driving. The study also distinguished traffic deaths resulting from alcohol that transpired on holidays and weekends from the overall total and found no evidence supporting the reduction claim made by Uber.

People who are facing drunk driving charges face serious consequences if a conviction is obtained. Thus, it may be advisable to contact a defense attorney as soon as possible. Many DUI cases are settled through plea negotiations with the prosecutor that provide for reduced penalties upon the payment of a fine, the completion of awareness classes and other alternative penalties.
